BEIJING: China on Thursday defended its decision to support
Pakistan at the UN over Mumbai attacks accused
Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi's release on bail, saying the move was based "on facts and spirit of objectiveness and fairness".
The justification came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed India's disappointment over the issue during his meeting with Chinese president Xi Jingping in Russia.
"As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China always deals with 1267 (sanctions) committee matters based on facts and in the spirit of objectiveness and fairness," Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said.
She did not elaborate on the facts while New Delhi has shared evidence about Lakhavi's involvement in Mumbai attacks with Pakistan.
China has put "a technical hold" on discussions concerning Lakhvi's release at the UN to delay any discussion on it for at least three months.
This is seen in New Delhi as an attempt to protect Pakistan from being exposed for sheltering terrorists.
