There are an astonishing number of people watching Natalie Gulbis at the U.S. Open

LANCASTER, Pa. — Early on Thursday at the U.S. Women’s Open, World Nos. 2 and 3, Lydia Ko and Stacy Lewis, playing together for the first two days, get their rounds off to modest applause.

Ko and Lewis are two of the biggest names in women’s golf, but it was Natalie Gulbis, ranked 312th in the world, who was drawing the biggest crowds. Gulbis has just one win to her name, but hundreds of people flocked to watch the 32-year-old’s 8:32 a.m. (ET) tee time.

It’s only slightly surprising that Gulbis is drawing such huge numbers — easily the largest on the course during that part of the day. She’s appeared in a number of Sports Illustrated‘s swimsuit issues, featured repeatedly in Golf Magazine‘s annual “Most Beautiful Women in Golf” feature, and she’s one of the most popular golfers on tour on Instagram.

On the course, Gulbis going through some major struggles.  She’s missed the cut in four of her eight starts this season, and her best finish was a T-25 back in April.

She got off to another poor start at this year’s U.S. Open, where she played her first four holes in four over. She’ll almost certainly miss the cut, but she’s assured lots of airtime anyway. Earlier this year, Gulbis was hired as an on-course analyst for Fox’s U.S. Open coverage.
