Restaurant Review: Silver leaf
Silver Leaf is the 24-hour coffee shop and all-day dining restaurant of the Cama Hotel. Besides the usual coffee shop fare, it also offers Parsi cuisine.
Decor
Silver Leaf is accessible from Khanpur Road, which is one of its USPs as a walk-in diner does not need to go through the hotel to get to this restaurant. The interior is brightly lit, receiving natural light through good-sized windows by day.
The décor and ambience of this restaurant is relatively casual and a bit dated.
Food
Being a coffee shop, Silver Leaf is specially known for its Club Sandwich which has three lightly toasted slices of fresh house-made bread – the Classic Cama Club comes with chicken and coleslaw, while the Vegetarian Club has tomato, cucumber, pimento and paneer. The Kathi Rolls with house special chicken or paneer and crunchy vegetables in paratha are a substantial one dish meal. The Classical Fish and Chips (crispy batter fried seawater bekti) and Grilled Chicken Breast are among the other popular dishes, and they also offer Baked Fish/Chicken/Macaroni, Veg Au-gratin and Mushroom Florentine which will be enjoyed by those who like cheese. If you prefer North Indian food, the Paneer Tikka or Hariyali Chicken in Cheese Naan is one of the restaurant’s signatures. The Dum Biryani (chicken or vegetables) is also one of the popular dishes.

Silver Leaf also offers a good standard of Parsi meat dishes. The Patrani Macchi or banana leaf wrapped fish has a minty chutney rather than coriander and coconut paste which is commonly used for the Parsi version, and it is used very lightly so you could ask for more on the side. The Khara Papeta Ni Murgi (chicken and potato in a tomato-based gravy) and Sali Boti (mutton curry with potato straws) are well-made with distinctive flavours, The Kolmi Patio, which needs to be ordered off-the-menu, gives you the combination of sweet, sour and spicy flavours that is the hallmark of Parsi cooking. The classic Parsi lentil and vegetable stew, the Dhansak available here with or without mutton, though, is just passable unless you order ahead for it to be slow-cooked. They offer a delicious Khichdi Keema, with a good balance of rice, lentils and mince meat.
The restaurant takes pride in its desserts. The Fruit Trifle, with diced fruit and soft sponge cake layers, topped with cream, is excellent with the rich fruit syrupy flavour standing out and lending the required moistness to the sponge. The Caramel Custard here has a good texture but sometimes tends to be oversweet. The Chocolate Mousse has a bitter chocolate taste which gives it punch. The Apple Pie is not consistently good – take a look at it in the glass display cases before ordering to see that the crust has been done as you like it.
Plus and minus
Silver Leaf is a pleasant place for a meal, and it is handy for substantial snack or meal in the late afternoon or after midnight when there are few restaurants open in this side of the city.
