KUCHING: Open University Malaysia (OUM) Sarawak Learning Centre recently extended a helping hand to the Nur Murni Charity House with a donation of cash and rice.

The visiting team of seven staff members was led by their director Abdullah Borda.

Abdullah said Nur Murni was the recipient of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts this year.

“It’s about carrying out our role as a responsible corporate citizen to help care for the less fortunate,” he said during the visit to Nur Murni Charity House at Lorong Field Force 8E , Taman Green Field, Batu Kawa yesterday.

According to Nur Murni Charity House manager Siti Khadijah Din, the house which has operated for over three years is registered as a welfare body.

“We also operate as a boarding home and are recognised by the State Welfare Department. Our patron is Women, Welfare and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah,” she said.

Nur Murni is caring for 86 Muslim orphans, children from poor families, broken homes or similar situations. They are sheltering 62 children in their boarding homes while the rest remain with their families.

Khadijah said they are self-funded and seek donations of necessities such as used clothes (infant to adult, male and female), shoes, bags, kitchen ware, furniture and toys.

“We have 90 donation boxes out there, which is how people usually learn about us,” she said.

Also present was Nur Murni Finance and Welfare Officer Aini Aman.

The Nur Murni Welfare and Education Association is under the Malaysian Medical Welfare and Services Foundation (YKPPM).

OUM is the first open and distance learning (ODL) university in Malaysia, providing part-time studies with tutorial classes on weekends.
