CMA CGM buys short-sea operator OPDR to merge with MacAndrews
FRENCH shipping giant CMA CGM has acquired short sea operator OPDR (Oldenburg-Portugiesische Dampfschiffs-Rhederei), that runs ships between Europe and Africa to be merged with its existing short sea unit, MacAndrews.
In 2014, OPDR lifted 200,000 TEU against MacAndrews' 230,000 TEU, said the CMA CGM statement.
"OPDR and MacAndrews capacities combination will reinforce the European offer of the CMA CGM Group, and its tailor-made intermodal solutions," said the company.
The acquisition, made with the approval of the European Commission, also has the blessing on the Moroccan competition authorities.
OPDR had been part of the Bernhard Schulte Group, providing door-to-door logistics between north Europe, the Canary Islands, the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco.
The company employs 200 people and its fleet sails four trades between north Europe and the Canaries, south of Spain and the Canaries, north Europe, Spain and Portugal as well as north Europe and Morocco.
OPDR and CMA CGM subsidiary MacAndrews are a good fit, said the company. "MacAndrews offers rail, road and short sea container transport between the Iberian Peninsula, the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Poland, Baltic states and Russia," said the statement.
Said CMA CGM executive officer Farid Salem: "This new acquisition reinforces the group's presence on the growing European short sea transport."
CMA CGM, the world's third largest container line after Maersk and MSC, has 468 vessels calling more than 400 ports. In 2014, it carried 12.2 million TEU.
