The Navi Mumbai police on Wednesday traced 10-year-old Priyanka Gupta, who had been missing from her Kamothe residence since July 4. The police arrested her mother and step-father, as well as their friend, for abandoning her at a railway station and then spinning a false tale about her disappearance.

Priyanka, who used to stay with her parents in Kamothe, had gone missing on the morning of July 4. Her mother Poonam had later given a complaint to the police saying that Priyanka had gone missing while she and her husband Vijay were sleeping in the house. The police sent a team to the family’s native place in Uttar Pradesh, where they got their first clue.

“Residents of the area where Poonam used to stay before coming to Navi Mumbai told us that Poonam’s husband Vijay had died two years ago, and that the man with her was actually Mustafa Khan, with whom she had eloped,” said senior inspector Shriram Mullemwar.
Simultaneously, another team learned about a cousin brother of Priyanka’s, who stays in Diva and runs a fast food stall there.

The team spoke to him, who told them that Priyanka had come to him two days ago, and that he had dropped her at her uncle’s residence in Chembur.

The police then picked up Poonam and Khan for questioning, and also sent a team to Chembur, from where Priyanka was taken into custody.

Festive offer

“Inquiries revealed that Khan, along with his friend Dinesh Bhaskar, took Priyanka to Mansarovar railway station and abandoned her there. A passing woman saw her wandering alone, asked her what was wrong, and took her to her cousin in Diva, who then took her to her uncle in Chembur. Poonam, Khan and Bhaskar were subsequently arrested,” said Mullemwar, adding that Priyanka would be subjected to detailed medical tests and then handed over to the Child Welfare Commission.

The arrested trio have been charged for abandoning child, furnishing false information to a public servant and common intention under the Indian Penal Code, the police said.
