Calangute: The Calangute village panchayat has proposed a new traffic roundabout near the Calangute police station on the Chogm road, a spot which has become dangerous for motorists in recent times.
Sources said the owner of the land, which is proposed to be acquired for the roundabout, has allegedly objected to the proposal. The panchayat has decided to request the land owner to donate the land, while the land owner has demanded that the land be acquired through proper land acquisition proceedings and he be compensated for the same.
The panchayat has also proposed to install a statue of Msgr Herculano Gonsalves within the roundabout. Gonsalves was a prominent religious personality from Calangute and founder of the Pious Association of the Sisters of St Alex, which is now known as the Congregation of Handmaids of Christ. The congregation has its mother house near the proposed roundabout.
Gonsalves, born in 1868 at Benaulim, was also the founder of the Little Flowers of Jesus School in Calangute. His mortal remains were enshrined in a monument in front of the mother house in 1952. The panchayat had earlier proposed that a traffic circle at the St Anthony’s chapel junction be named after Gonsalves, but the plan did not work out. Panchayat sources said the installation of the statue will cost 11 lakh. tnn
