13-year-old killed in school; case against other students

A 13-year-old student was killed allegedly by his schoolmates inside their school premises in Ahmednagar district for “staring at a girl”, police said on Wednesday. Kiran Goraksh Sonawane, was a class VII student of the Nutan School at Rajapur in Sangamner.

“Sonawane’s head was smashed against a bench and later, against a tree in the school. The provocation was that he used to stare at a girl,” a police official from Sangamner city police station said.

The incident took place on June 26, police said. After the assault Sonawane was admitted to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries on July 1. Initially, it was a case of accidental death but subsequently an FIR was registered yesterday. An FIR has been lodged against three students and against “five to six” other students whose identity is yet to be ascertained. No arrests have been made.

Kiran’s mother alleged that her son was the victim of a “vendetta” killing. “Kiran used to tell me all girls are like my sisters,” she said. This is the second such incident in the state in the last few days, where a student was killed within the school premises. PTI
