With almost all local bodies in the district struggling with the stray dog menace, the district panchayat on Tuesday took the lead in addressing the issue by launching anti-rabies vaccination aimed at vaccinating around 50,000 stray dogs in a week-long programme.

District panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappillil inaugurated the programme at a function held at the Kakkanad veterinary hospital. The programme is being implemented with the cooperation of the district veterinary department, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and animal lover’s organisation.

Around 250 stray dogs were vaccinated on the first day.
