Residents of Nallamanaickenpatti village in Thottanuthu panchayat blocked Natham-Dindigul Highway, in protest against lack of basic amenities and road facilities in their village on Tuesday.

The agitators said that the village did not have drainage channels and proper roads connecting neighbouring towns and villages.

Protected drinking water supply was also a distant dream to the residents. Quality of the water supplied by the panchayat was very poor, they alleged.

Several children of this village were affected by a mysterious fever. Prevalence of water-borne diseases too posed a grave threat to residents. With no drainage channel, sewage water was overflowing on streets.

Despite repeated requests, the village panchayat did not take necessary steps to improve basic amenities. Condemning the lethargic attitude of the panchayat, the villagers took to the street, they said. They also complained that a pool of drainage water had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, posing a threat to their health.

Five children of this village were under treatment at Dindigul Government Hospital for water-borne diseases and fever, they said.

Later, they withdrew the agitation as the officials assured to take steps. Traffic was disrupted for half an hour.

Buses proceeding to Natham, Karaikudi and Devakottai were stranded in both directions of the road.
