Bollywood Marriages: When Love Makes Way For an Arranged Match

Shahid Kapoor was previously in a relationship with Kareena Kapoor Khan

Mumbai: Bollywood stars are known for immortalising die-hard lovers on the big-screen but in real life many of them choose the traditional way of matrimony.

The recent example of the arranged marriage trend is Haider star Shahid Kapoor and Delhi University student Mira Rajput, an alliance which has been arranged by their families.

The 34-year-old actor surprised everyone with the news of him opting for the traditional route.

In 2013, when asked what he looks for in a partner, Shahid had said, "I have not thought about it much. When you fall in love everything seems right. If I fall in love that will be good enough."

Shahid was in a relationship with actress Kareena Kapoor Khan for over three years and was later linked to Vidya Balan, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and Bipasha Basu.

Superstar Salman Khan, who has always made headlines for his relationships with various actresses, has also expressed his desire to settle down in an arranged set up.

"I am open to arranged marriage. Sometimes, love marriages don't work and arranged marriages do. At times, it's the other way round. It depends on the individuals, how they go about their lives, how compatible they are," said Salman.

Several other Bollywood celebrities have also treaded the same path. Madhuri Dixit had an arranged marriage with Dr Shriram Nene in 1999.

Madhuri then moved to the US and bid farewell to Bollywood - not for long, though. She came to India with the musical drama Aaja Nachle in 2007 and went back again only to return permanently to Mumbai in 2011 along with her husband and two sons.

Masti star Vivek Oberoi had an arranged marriage to Priyanka Alva, daughter of Karnataka minister Jeevaraj Alva, in 2010.

"Priyanka just fills me with positivity, love, peace and calm. In the last two-and-half years that I have been married, I have changed a lot as a person. For me I have nobody who I hate, I don't have place for hate in life," said Vivek in 2013.

The two are happily married and have two children - Vivaan Veer and Ameyaa Nirvana.

Late legendary actor Shammi Kapoor also had an arranged marriage with Neela Devi after the death of his first wife Geeta Bali. The match was reportedly arranged by his filmmaker brother Raj Kapoor's wife Krishna.

Raj Kapoor too had a traditional arranged marriage. He was married to his distant cousin Krishna Malhotra. His father Prithviraj Kapoor reportedly brought the couple together.

Actress Karisma Kapoor was engaged to actor Abhishek Bachchan, but their wedding was called off. Karisma later married Delhi-based industrialist Sanjay Kapoor and has two children Samaira and Kiaan. In 2013, the couple filed for divorce.
