Officials of the Labour Department conducted checks on retailers selling helmets in different places across central districts on Friday in the wake of complaints of helmets being sold at a premium.
With the police continuing strict enforcement of the helmet rule, many automobile and retail shops selling helmets continued to witness heavy rush.
Following complaints over the quality of helmets and the price, the Commissioner of Labour had ordered the checks.
Teams of Labour Department officials fanned out to retail shops in Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Perambalur, and Pudukottai districts to check whether the helmets sold in shops adhered to the quality norms and the price conformed to the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of the products.
In Thanjavur district, officials conducted checks in various shops at Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Pattukottai.
With violations being detected, cases were booked against nine shops under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011.
Booked
Labour Department officials said while some were found to be selling helmets without MRP printed on the products, the others were booked for charging a price over and above the MRP. Fifty helmets found without any indication of the MRP were seized.
“Besides the MRP, the products should carry the date of packaging and the name and address of the manufacturers,” an officer said.
In Perambalur, cases were booked against three shops after checks conducted by officials led to the detection of helmets being sold for a price higher than their MRP.
Officials found that helmets with MRPs ranging from Rs. 545 to Rs. 750 were sold at Rs.1,200 to Rs.1,400 a piece.
Officials of the department conducted checks at Othakadai in Tiruchi and in Pudukottai district.
