Portrait of a Prime Minister

July 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

Artist N. Radhakrishnan has reasons to be happy. He recently handed over a portrait of Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala to the Minister at his residence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s sketch is next in his line-up, which he plans to present to Modi during Onam.

The portrait of Mr. Chennithala was his 10,001th, says Mr. Radhakrishan. The Minister even rewarded him for his efforts.

Mr. Chennithala has always helped him in his endeavours, says Mr. Radhakrishnan. “I was able to present a portrait of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to the former President only on Mr. Chennithala’s recommendation.”

Celebrities

Mr. Radhakrishnan who has captured on canvas hundreds of celebrities, has also recently finished working on portraits of Ministers K.P. Joseph, P.K. Abdu Rabb, and Adoor Prakash.

The artist, who hails from Kollam but whose work demands that he mostly stays in the capital, doesn’t bank on imagination.

“I only draw what I can see,” he says.

Construction of Mr. Radhakrishnan’s centre for art named Kalakshetra is on and should be ready by Onam. The artist says he is working on Narendra Modi’s portrait. “I will take it to Delhi.”
