PDS rice seized

About 25 tonnes of rice meant for Public Distribution System was seized by the Special Operations Team (East) of Cyberabad police following raids on two godowns on city outskirts on Sunday.

According to the police, a businessman Yadagiri of Medipally bought the rice from a broker Satyanarayana of Saroornagar. “Satyanarayana purchased the stock from different rice dealers appointed by the civil supplies department in the city and sold it to Yadagiri for a commission,” SOT Inspector, N Ch Ranga Swamy said.

Yadagiri would sell the consignment to Shaker and Venkatesh, both rice traders, who would shift it to different rice mills where the rice is polished, packed in different bags and diverted to the open market, he added.

Two financiers held

The Tappachabutra police on Sunday arrested two private money lenders on charge of cheating and extortion.

The accused Jagadeesh Parshad Jaiswal (75) and Naveen Parshad Jaiswal (39) both residents of Karwan allegedly provided loans at exorbitant interest rates to the public, the police said. Based on a complaint, made by a petty trader who charged that although he took a loan of Rs. 20,000, he was forced to pay Rs. 48,000. An amount of Rs. 5, 50,055 lakh and other property was seized from them.

Two killed in accident

A 36-year-old woman Swapna of Dhoolpet died after being run over by a DCM van at Mustaidpura in Karwan on Sunday afternoon. The victim along with her relative was going on a bike when a DCM van hit it. A businessman, P Vivek (25) of Yousufguda died after being run over by a truck near GHMC office late on Saturday night. The victim was returning home after meeting a friend at Himayatnagar when the accident took place.
