The Medical Council of India (MCI) has rejected the applications and the compliance reports submitted by ESIC medical colleges in Bengaluru, Kalaburagi, Chennai and Joka in Kolkata for admitting students in their medical colleges for the academic year 2015-16. With this, seats in the two ESIC medical colleges in the State are unlikely to be available to students for this academic year.
Sources in the ESIC Medical College told The Hindu here on Monday that the MCI has written to the Union Labour and the Health and Family Welfare Ministries not to allow any fresh intake of students during 2015-16, pointing out several shortfalls, including that of faculty and infrastructure.
The MCI teams, which inspected the facilities in the four medical colleges run by the ESIC earlier, had pointed out several discrepancies and shortfalls.
The Health Ministry had taken up the cause of the ESIC Medical Colleges and had submitted a compliance report to the MCI about fulfilling all requirements.
The sources said that although there were indications from the MCI that the issue was being given a favourable consideration and that admission would be allowed for 2015-16 with some conditions, the decision of the MCI comes as a shock to the authorities and has put paid to the aspirations of meritorious students among the poor.
The sources said the ESIC now proposes to go to the Supreme Court in a day or two, seeking a direction to the MCI for allowing admissions.
