The State government has suspended the Deputy Director of the Department of Women and Child Development as well as the Child Development Programme Officers (CDPO) of four taluks for allegedly violating norms in procuring food and other items for anganwadi centres.

The officers are Deputy Director A. Shakuntala and CDPOs R. Sumitramma (Kolar), Chikkavenkataramanappa (Bangarpet), K. Prabhavathi (Srinivaspur), and T.L. Pranuthi (Malur).

In the suspension order dated July 3, 2015, a copy of which is available with The Hindu , Deputy Secretary of the department M.K. Bhramarajappa held the suspended officials responsible for causing losses worth lakhs of rupees by flouting norms while procuring food materials for 2015-16. “If norms were followed, there would not be 70 per cent loss to the government,” the officer said.

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions, led by Karnataka State Anganwadi Nowkararu Mattu Sahayakiyara Sangha, has welcomed the action against officials. “The government action has vindicated our stand about the rampant corruption in the department in Kolar. But disciplinary action alone is not sufficient. The loss caused to the government exchequer should be recovered from the officers,” said S. Varalakshmi, president of the sangha.
