Automated Teller Machines will be commissioned in Sivakasi, Palayamkottai and Tirunelveli post offices shortly. Efforts are on to bring all post offices in southern region under core banking system (CBS) as part of digitisation programme to provide better service to customers, according to J. Charukeshi, Postmaster General, Southern Region (Madurai).

Inaugurating an ATM – the 16{+t}{+h}in the State and the second in the district – at Dindigul Head Post Office here on Monday, she said that construction work for ATM centres was over in all the 29 head post offices in Madurai region. After net connectivity was provided, other head post offices would get ATM facility.

The postal department had undergone an end-to-end IT modernisation project to equip itself with requisite modern tools and technologies, provide best customer service and improve operational efficiency. “We have plans to digitise post offices by the year-end,” she said.

Modernisation would rebuild rural postal infrastructure to create institutional last-mile connectivity for service delivery and IT-based services, including for banking, insurance and government schemes such as MGNREGS and social security scheme, in 1.54 lakh post offices in the country, 1.29 lakh of which were in rural areas.

The first ATM in the region was inaugurated in Karaikudi on May 30 and the second in Palani on June 12. Already, 2,590 post offices, including head and sub post offices, in the State had migrated to the CBS platform, she noted.

Response to Selva Magal Scheme was very good. About 60,000 customers joined the scheme in April and May, Ms. Charukeshi added.

Orientation training was being given to postal staff to handle modern tools for delivering quick service to customers.

Rupee ATM card would be given to all savings bank account-holders to enable them to withdraw any amount through postal ATMs. They should maintain a minimum balance of Rs. 500, she said.

Senior Superintendent of Posts Chandrasekar Kakkamanu and Assistant Superintendent of Posts V. Srinivasan were present.
