Amid the raging Vyapam storm, a professor heading a panel looking into pre-medical test (PMT) irregularities in the Jabalpur Medical College has alleged that a former dean of the college was pressurised by a BJP leader, Faggan Singh Kulaste, and told not to expel tainted students in 2013.
Dr B K Guha alleged that the former dean of Jabalpur Medical College, Dr L P Varma, who was transferred to Sagar medical college in 2013, was under pressure not to act against students who had used unfair means to clear the PMT. He added that Dr Varma had confided in him about being warned against throwing out 29 tainted students.

The Bhopal-based Directorate of Medical Education had in 2013 asked Dr Varma, along with deans of other government medical colleges, to expel students against whom cases of irregularities had been proved. The students were expelled only after Varma’s transfer.
When reached for his comments, Dr Varma avoided a direct reply saying he did not remember receiving any threats from Kulaste. When told about a local newspaper carrying his comments accusing Kulaste back then, he said, “Maybe I was not in Jabalpur because I travelled frequently.’’
Dr Varma admitted that some tainted students met him with requests to retain them.
Kulaste could not be reached despite repeated attempts. He, however, told a television channel that he did not arm-twist anyone and had nothing to do with the MPPEB scam.
Dr B K Guha’s allegations came a day after the body of Dr Arun Sharma, the dean of Jabalpur Medical College, was found in a Delhi hotel.
