BJP leader put pressure on ex-dean of Jabalpur college

The Bhopal-based Directorate of Medical Education had in 2013 asked Dr Varma, along with deans of other government medical colleges, to expel students against whom cases of irregularities had been proved. The students were expelled only after Varma’s transfer.

When reached for his comments, Dr Varma avoided a direct reply saying he did not remember receiving any threats from Kulaste. When told about a local newspaper carrying his comments accusing Kulaste back then, he said, “Maybe I was not in Jabalpur because I travelled frequently.’’

Dr Varma admitted that some tainted students met him with requests to retain them.

Kulaste could not be reached despite repeated attempts. He, however, told a television channel that he did not arm-twist anyone and had nothing to do with the MPPEB scam.

Dr B K Guha’s allegations came a day after the body of Dr Arun Sharma, the dean of Jabalpur Medical College, was found in a Delhi hotel.
