Loblaw and UFCW make breakthrough, members to vote on new agreement

Strikes to continue at nine stores until deal is finalized
MISSISSAUGA, ONT.—The United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 175 and 633 and Loblaw Companies have achieved amendments to an agreement covering the nine stores where union members have been on strike since July 2, the union said.
The 1,600 union members on strike at Zehrs and RCSS stores in Kent, Essex and Lambton counties will have the opportunity to vote on the amendments to the memorandum of settlement at meetings to be scheduled in the coming week. Strike action will continue at the nine affected stores pending the outcome of the votes.
The parties returned to negotiations on July 2 at the request of the Ministry of Labour appointed conciliation officer as workers formed picket lines.
Strikes planned by 1000A were postponed as a result of the tentative agreement. UFCW 1000A workers were set to strike July 5 if an agreement was not reached.
“Your union believes it’s important for our members to have the opportunity to examine and vote on the amended offer and as such, has postponed the strike deadline,” the union told members.
If the offer is rejected, workers at 60 locations represented by UFCW 1000A will commence striking July 11.
