DG Vanzara files Rs 101 crore suit against author for defamatory remarks in book

Mufti Abdul Qayum Mansuri in his book has alleged that after his arrest in the 2002 case he was tortured in the custody of Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), Ahmedabad.

Retired IPS officer DG Vanzara, chargesheeted in Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kauser Bi, Tulsiram Prajapati and Ishrat Jahan fake encounter cases, on Monday filed Rs.101 crore suit against Mufti Abdul Qayum Mansuri who recently penned a book “11 months after spending 11 years in jail,” a year after he was acquitted from Akshardham terror attack case by the Supreme Court.

Mansuri in his book has alleged that after his arrest in the 2002 case he was tortured in the custody of Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), Ahmedabad. He has named several officers in the book but three names of three officers figure prominently that includes Vanzara, IPS officer GL Singhal among others. The terror attack case was investigated by Vanzara, Singhal who were then posted in DCB.

Vanzara has filed a suit for Rs.101 crore against Qayum through his lawyer VD Gajjar who said that the matter will be heard before a city civil and sessions court in Ahmedabad today. Family sources said that the book has several defamatory remarks against Vanzara without any basis. Besides, the sources said that there will be more cases against Qayum and the publisher of the book.

Vanzara is out on bail and currently confined to Mumbai as per his bail condition prescribed by the court in both-Sohrabuddin and Ishrat cases. Qayum and four acquitted persons have sought legal action against Vanzara, Singhal among others and have sought compensation through a petition in the apex court.

Qayum was arrested by the DCB on August 29, 2003 11 months after terror attack on the temple in Gandhinagar that left 33 dead and 86 injured. Mansuri and others were sentenced to death by the lower court which was confirmed by the Gujarat High Court. Last year the Supreme Court quashed the verdict and acquitted all of them.
