Government keen on improving standards of the poor: Minister

The AIADMK government was keen on improving the standards of living of the economically weaker sections.

Keeping this in mind, the poorest of the poor in the society was given free gold and cash assistance to perform the wedding of the girls.

Speaking on the occasion to present “Thaalikku thangam” (gold for marriage), Revenue Minister R.B. Udayakumar and Information Minister K.T. Rajendra Balaji said here on Sunday that their leader Jayalalithaa was aware of the difficulties faced by people in the below poverty line category.

At a time when they could not make both ends meet in daily routine, it would be a Herculean task to perform weddings.

Hence, the government supported such families and the girls to live their lives with dignity.

Hence, Chief Minister, through a scheme, presented four grams of gold, cash assistance and other support to families falling in different categories.

For girls who had pursued higher education, the gold given was slightly more than those who had passed out 10th and plus two, officials said.

A total of 3,588 grams of gold were presented to 897 eligible persons at a function along with cash assistance of Rs3.25 crore in the presence of Collector V. Rajaraman and other officials from the revenue and social welfare departments. The MLA Pandiarajan and other elected representatives also spoke on the occasion, a press release said here.
