Choi finished impressively, posting birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to reach a three-round score of twelve-under-par in fading light after rain had delayed play for much of the day.
Nearest rival Brittany Lang signalled her own intentions by adding four birdies in the last six holes in the dusk to end the day a shot behind Choi.
“The delays do bother me but I can’t control the weather so I have to accept it and just keep going,” Choi said at the end of the round, following a three-hour delay.
“I played very well today, and I’m very satisfied. I’m very excited that I’m here, and then I’m going to look forward for tomorrow,” she said.
Spain's Azahara Munoz's steady tournament continued, adding another 68 to her opening two round of 67 and 68 to take third place.
Behind the leading three lurk a trio of dangerous players all on eight-under-par, including American Stacy Lewis and world number one Yani Tseng.
“I’m four shots back with one more day to go,” Tseng said. “This is a great golf course and I’ll try to make more putts and see how the day goes. I made some good birdies today and I hope to continue doing that tomorrow.”
