George R.R. Martin Will Be At San Diego Comic Con 2015–Sort Of

A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones fans devastated by the news that creator George R.R. Martin had cancelled his appearance at San Diego Comic Con just got good news. A tiny, fluffy bit of good news.

Through his Twitter account, Martin announced that he will in fact be at San Diego Comic Con, in plushy form.

The news of the George R.R. Martin plushy, though adorable, is probably poor comfort for fans of his epic A Song of Ice and Fire saga, or the hit series it inspired, Game of Thrones. With the sixth book in the series, TheWinds of Winter, still in some stage of creation and the HBO series Game of Thrones, now apparently well ahead of Martin’s story, theories and rumors have taken over every website even remotely dedicated to Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire.

In March 2015, Martin announced that he would not attend San Diego Comic Con. Instead, Martin committed to tackling the narrative of The Winds of Winter, the first book in the series since 2011’s A Dance with Dragons. The subject of how close to completion TheWinds of Winter is has been a source of constant speculation and some frustration.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, rumors spread recently that TheWinds of Winter was complete. The rumors sprung from a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” post in which director and producer Jack Bender seemed to confirm that he had received and read an advance copy of TheWinds of Winter. Sources later determined that Bender had most likely misread the statement and confused “book 6” with an outline of Game of Thrones Season 6.

While neither Martin nor any of his representatives confirmed that The Winds of Winter is finished, they didn’t deny it either. So the question remains, how close is George R.R. Martin to finishing The Winds of Winter?

Martin may be closer to completion of The Winds of Winter than he is letting on.

When Martin announced that he would not attend San Diego Comic Con, he also cancelled an appearance at the World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga. The convention is scheduled for November 2015. But, near the end of the blog post, Martin reserved the right to attend either or both convention “should I complete and deliver WINDS OF WINTER before [they] roll round.”

That statement alone seems to confirm that Martin has passed the first draft of The Winds of Winter. However, in September 2014, George R.R. Martin’s United Kingdom publisher, Jane Johnson, confirmed that The Winds of Winter would not be released in 2015. Which at the very least means the final revisions haven’t been completed.

So for now, the official word on when Game of Thrones fans can read The Winds of Winter is: when its ready.
