SURAT: A truck going towards Bharuch from Ankleshwar on Sardar Bridge on NH 8 fell into Narmada River breaking the bridge parapet on Saturday night. Driver of the truck died in the incident on the spot. His body was taken out by police and ambulance staff. The truck fell on the dry land of the river.
The accident added to the already worsened traffic jam issue over the Narmada River as the Sardar Bridge, which is the only safe bridge to cross the river.
However, the bridge did not suffer major damage but only a section of the parapet has broken.
Police identified the deceased as Pravin Gohil of Bhavnagar, who was driving the truck GJ-14-T-4665. There was no one else in the truck. Gohil died on the spot due to the crash. The truck broke the parapet while it was on fourth span of bridge from Ankleshwar towards Bharuch. The incident took place at late night after which police teams from Bharuch and Ankleshwar rushed to the spot.
Initially the crash led to minor traffic jam but it was later cleared by the police. Police posted additional force at the spot for smooth traffic movement and made safety arrangements around the damaged portion of the bridge.
