Member of Irani gang nabbed for chain snatching in Vadodara

Gorwa police, on Saturday, arrested a member of the notorious Irani gang in connection with a series of chain snatching in the city.

VADODARA: Gorwa police, on Saturday, arrested a member of the notorious Irani gang in connection with a series of chain snatching in the city. The accused identified as Sarfaraz Irani has been conducting a series of robberies in the city. It is estimated that gold jewellery worth Rs 8.71 lakh was snatched by this gang in recent times by this gang.
"We had CCTV footage from one of the robberies conducted by Sarfaraz 20 days ago in Gorwa.
Based on the information we arrested Irani who has revealed three other names," said Gorwa police inspector MM Puwar.
According to Puwar, the accused along with his aides have been actively conducting robberies in the city for the last six months.
Irani gang is known for its national network of criminals who conduct robberies and burglaries across the country. "They mainly operate in Maharashtra. They rob citizens of their gold jewellery and head straight to National Highway 8 in order to move out of the city," added Puwar.
Sarfaraz told the police that the gang robbed gold from women above 50 years of age between 10 am and 12pm. The gang has been targeting women visiting temples and banks in areas like Gorwa, Gotri and Karelibaug.
Upon interrogation, Sarfaraz revealed the names of his aides Samir Irani, Ghulam Irani and Raju Shiekh. The police have also recovered two motorbikes from the accused. One of the motorbikes is registered as stolen in Bhiwandi Shantinagar police station in Mumbai.
Sarfaraz and the other accused are all residents of Maharashtra. "So far we have detected nine incidents of robberies, we are yet to recover the stolen jewelleries," said Puwar.
