Now, #selfiewithpothole to highlight city’s bad roads
The campaigners have asked people to post selfies and also tag the BBMP commissioner in their posts

In keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign ‘SelfieWithDaughter’ that received an incredible response, techies in the city have launched a new campaign, SelfieWithPothole, urging people to post their selfies with notorious potholes across the city and share it on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag.

The techies kickstarted the campaign on Saturday. People have also been asked to tag the BBMP commissioner along with their selfies.

The campaigners hope the initiative will force the BBMP — that has been turning a blind eye to the situation on the ground — to sit up and take notice of the pathetic condition of roads in Bengaluru. “My friends and I feel the best campaign for Bengalureans would be a selfie with pothole. So, I posted a thread on Facebook to know if the campaign was worth starting.

The campaign got instant response from the netizens. This is because most people in the city are affected by potholes. So, we decided on a common hashtag and also decided to tag the BBMP commissioner,” Rajdeep Ghosh, a business analyst, told Mirror.

Shwet Kamal, who works as a regional director for a private company, said: “The roads are pathetic and it is only worsening with each passing day. We have been trying to get things fixed. We need to take up such initiatives to highlight the poor conditions of the road.”

Some techies residing in the tech corridor said it was a shame that despite being the IT capital, Bengaluru was plagued by poor infrastructure. “Roads are the indicators of a city’s infrastructure. The moment one lands in Bengaluru, they talk about the poor condition of roads here. Though hundreds of companies are housed in ITPB, roads in the vicinity are worse than roads in villages,” said Vikram K, a techie.

Fed up with BBMP inaction, some proactive residents tried to fix potholes on their own. “However, such initiatives don’t last long because of inadequate resources. We have noticed that when potholes are not fixed immediately, the entire road gets eroded. I have also seen that areas that house corporators and officials have asphalted roads while roads where common citizens stay are always neglected,” Ghosh said.

The campaigners are hoping the hashtag SelfieWithDaughter goes viral and the next time they pose selfies alongside smooth roads.
