Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said that present day leaders do not match the stature of past leaders like Lokmanya Tilak. Thackeray who spoke in Marathi said, “There are no political leaders whose name one would like to take in the next 50 years.”

Although Thackeray did not mention any name, the comment comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being projected as a national leader, and global leader by the BJP. Thackeray was visiting a Mumbai school where he distributed tablet computers to students.

Top BJP leaders in the state refused to react, though they believe the criticism is an attempt by Thackeray to reaffirm his own political identity in Maharashtra.

A BJP minister who did not wish to be named said, “What’s new in the remark? That is typical Thackeryism. They always thrive on making tongue-in-cheek comments.”

A senior Sena functionary said, “Let us not distort facts. Thackeray was making a comparison between great leaders like Lokmanya Tilak with the present leadership. When we see their picture we remember their contribution and sacrifice but present leaders will not be remembered in the next fifty years.” The Shiv Sena and BJP, in an alliance in Maharashtra, have been in conflict on every issue for the last seven months.

Festive offer

Although both sides continue in the government, outside they undermine each other to score brownie points.

Thackeray had questioned the overwhelming response to Modi’s “digital India” campaign with corporate czars queuing up with huge investment for Make in India. The Sena questioned, “Why all those who have made Mumbai their home don’t display the same response when it comes to investment in Maharashtra?”

Sena has been using Saamana to slam Modi whether it relates to visits abroad, foreign policies or investment talks in home town Gujarat. In Maharashtra, Sena reminds the BJP that it owes them stability in the state government. BJP leaders believe the criticism is an attempt by Thackeray to reaffirm his own political identity.

Political managers in Sena admit, “Thackeray is not part of the government at centre or state. He will have to stand apart and assert his leadership. He raises issues that strike a chord.”

Sena ensures the differences are within limits so that coalition in Maharashtra continues.

The Sena cannot needle the BJP to a breaking point. The NCP had extended outside support when Fadnavis was forming the government.
