A Cork “Republican” silver salver and a Regency card table once at Fota House will excite plenty of Cork interest at Fonsie Mealy’s two day Chatsworth Fine Art sale in Castlecomer on July 21 and 22.
The rosewood card table has a figured fold over top with a large band of satinwood inlay.
On a platform base with four outsplayed scroll legs — it is complete with original decorated bass castors. The table is estimated at €1,800-€2,500.
In 1922 in Ireland the Civil War was raging and it was impossible to send silver to the Assay Office in Dublin. Silver made by Egan’s in Cork between July and September in 1922 was stamped with a special Cork Republican mark.
Around 80 pieces of Republican silver were made, and they are much prized by collectors.
This particular small salver is struck with a two masted ship and a single tower castle with the makers mark WE for William Egan. It is estimated at €8,000-€10,000.
A most unusual Killarney wood cabinet with an ebonised collector’s cabinet attached on top and crested by a lying stag — almost certainly made as an exhibition piece — is estimated at €10,000-€15,000.
A panel after Van Wyck of King William III leading his generals into the Battle of the Boyne is estimated at €450-€700.
There is a beautifully worked silver salver by Paul Storr in an auction likely to create national and international interest.
