Haryana may make it mandatory for athletes to play for 6 years

Haryana government seems to have learnt a lesson from ace boxer Vijender Singh's recent episode. The state government is now considering a mandatory service of minimum of six years for a sportsperson who gets a government job under the sports quota.

"Government is considering to make it mandatory for such sportsmen, who get job under the quota, to play atleast for next six years after getting the job," Haryana Sports Minister Anil Vij tweeted on Saturday.

The tweet came in the wake of Vijender Singh, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, turning a professional without taking permission from his employer - the Haryana government. The Police authorities were taken by surprise on learning about Vijender's decision early this week.

When the Police department threatened him with termination from the job, Vijender came into action and met Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday and sought permission from Director General of Police Yash Pal Singh to take part in professional boxing.

Vijender has signed a multi-year contract with London-based Queensberry Promotions company to participate in pro boxing. Francis Warren, Vijender's promoter, has promised to give him a minimum of six bouts a year.

Vijender is likely to fight his first bout in September. He will practice in Manchester before it.
