Wimbledon: Sam Groth loses to Roger Federer, Casey Dellacqua beaten by Agnieszka Radwanska in third round
Australia's Sam Groth and Casey Dellacqua are out of Wimbledon after losses to Roger Federer and Agnieszka Radwanska respectively.
Groth lost to Federer 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (7/5), 6-2 while Dellacqua bowed out with a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Poland's Radwanska.
Groth looked to take on the former world number one and All England Club legend Federer on centre court with his booming serve, but was broken at crucial stages in the first two sets.
The Australian put up a bigger fight in the third, taking Federer to a tie-break. and holding on to win it 7-5.
But Federer again broke Groth's serve early in the fourth set, which became a procession as the Swiss closed out the match in two hours and 16 minutes.
"I am very happy. It has been a hot week the first week but thankfully I have had easy matches going through without too many long four or five setters," Federer said.
Groth said he enjoyed the experience of playing on the big stage against the sport's biggest name, but said he proved he was "not just here to make up numbers".
"I said beforehand, I generally thought I could give him trouble and in the back end of the second set and the third set, once I settled down, I started to give him trouble.
"He's human."
But he lamented the butterflies that undermined his big chance to pull off the biggest win of his career with Federer's two-set start ultimately proving too much for the 27-year-old to reel in.
"I was just generally nervous, just couldn't make any feel shots," he said after playing in tennis's most famous cathedral for the first time.
Groth rocketed down a 236kph missile in the third game of the match, the second-fastest serve recorded at the All England Club, behind only American Taylor Dent's, also in a losing cause against Novak Djokovic, in 2010.
"How in the world can you handle that ... how can you see it?" four-time champion John McEnroe wondered from his courtside commentary box.
Dellacqua's run ended by 2012 runner-up
Radwankska ended Dellacqua's Wimbledon campaign with a ruthless straight-sets third-round win.
Radwanska, the 13th seed and 2012 finalist, outclassed Dellacqua 6-1, 6-4 in just 63 minutes on Saturday.
Dellacqua had been striving to reach the last 16 for the first time to match her career-best grand slam runs in Melbourne and New York.
Alas, it was more of the same as Radwanska scored another two-set victory in a one-sided rivalry between the pair.
Radwanska had conceded only seven games in four previous sets against Dellacqua.
Even after falling behind 4-0 in the second set in their latest encounter, she managed to wriggle free to deny the West Australian and progress to a last-16 meeting on Monday with defending champion Petra Kvitova or Jelena Jankovic.
Free-swinging Dellacqua clubbed 18 winners to 11 but ultimately paid the price for pressing too hard as 32 unforced errors to Radwanska's seven proved the difference on Show Court 18.
Meanwhile, Lleyton Hewitt extended his Wimbledon farewell as he and Thanasi Kokkinakis moved through to the third round of the doubles.
The Australian pair beat 15th seeds Henri Kontinen and Marin Draganja to move through to a third-round clash with Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau, the fourth seeds.
