“When graduation meets disaster.”

This was how 19-year-old Kino Ala Sangueza described the scene at University of the Philippines Los Baños in Laguna after the dome tent for its graduation rites collapsed on Saturday afternoon.

The BS Chemistry student, who passed by UPLB’s Freedom Park at around 12:30 p.m., took a photo of the collapsed tent and posted it on his Instagram and Facebook accounts.

Sangueza told INQUIRER.net that strong winds and rains in the area caused the tent to fall.

A UP police officer said a worker sustained head injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital after falling off the tent. No students were reportedly hurt as the graduation ceremonies started at 4 p.m.

Despite the collapsed tent, Sangueza said the graduation pushed through as the weather condition in the area also improved.

UPLB, along with six other UP campuses, has adopted on a pilot basis a new academic calendar which runs from August to May.
