A mother-in-law is a mother as well. Ask Kavita Rani and she will tell you why. The 36-year-old Uttam Nagar resident got a second life, thanks to her mother-in-law Vimla who donated her kidney to save Kavita. And it all happened when Kavita's own mother refused to donate her kidney, reneging from her earlier promise. Kavita, a housewife from Uttam Nagar in West Delhi, required kidney transplant and initially her mother had agreed to help her. But later, when she backed out, it was her motherin-law who stepped in to save Kavita's life."Everything was planned and my mother had agreed to help me. But suddenly she refused to donate her kidney. I was devastated. But my mother-in-law then decided to help me," Kavita Rani told Mail Today.

Her mother-in-law Vimla, 65, came forward and donated one of her kidneys. After examining Vimla, doctors found her fit to donate the kidney. The surgery took place at BLK Super Speciality Hospital on June 23. "It is not a reel life story, but a real one with a happy ending. Kavita underwent successful kidney transplantation at the hospital. She is fine now. It's amazing to see the relation between the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law," Dr Sunil Prakash, senior consultant and director of nephrology at the hospital told Mail Today. According to the doctors, Kavita had been suffering from frequent bouts of vomiting and also weight loss.

After conducting the initial tests, it was revealed that she was suffering from renal failure. A team of doctors decided that she would have to go for renal transplant. Dr Praksh said, "Her family faced the biggest challenge to find a first-degree donor, which can only be amongst close family members like mother, father, husband, son or daughter, brother or sister. Finally her mother agreed for to donate a kidney." All the investigations were completed but just before the transplant, her mother refused to give her kidney," added Dr Prakash.

After her mother-in-law decided to donate her kidney, Kavita saw a ray of hope. "I was so surprised and happy to see how my mother-in-law came forward. She is my new mother," said Kavita. After the transplant, both donor and the recipient are doing fine and have been discharged from the hospital.
