Cochrane RCMP have charged a resident of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation with murder in connection with the death of his father on Canada Day.

At about 11:45 p.m. on July 1, police were called to an area on Highway 1 near Highway 40 following reports a body had been discovered.

When officers arrived, they found a 55-year-old man lying by the side of the road. He was declared dead by EMS at the scene.

The victim, a resident of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, has not been identified.

An investigation was launched soon afterwards and that has resulted in RCMP arresting and charging a Morley resident.

Tristan Wesley, 27, has been charged with second degree murder, assault causing bodily harm, and uttering threats.

RCMP confirm Wesley is the biological son of the deceased.

Wesley is expected to appear in court on July 21.
