Dalit boy found murdered in Beed in suspected honour killing case

After preliminary investigation, police suspected it to be a case of honour killing as the boy had reportedly eloped with a minor girl from Muslim community in Ahmednagar.

A Dalit teen from Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra, who had recently escaped from a remand home, was found murdered in Beed district on Wednesday.

Police have booked the family members of the girl on charges of murder and atrocity.

The boy has been identified as Sunny Sagar Shinde (17). His body was found at Kolhewadi village in Patoda in Beed district, after which his aunt, Nanda Arun Ghodke, filed an FIR.

The police have booked 11 persons under sections 302, 363, 202, 34 of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The suspects include family members of the girl and a local corporator, who is chairman of the standing committee of the Ahmednagar Municipal Corporation.

if it was a case of honour killing, the investigating officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Chaphekar, said, “Yes. prima facie, it appears so. We have invoked sections of Atrocities Act against the suspect. We have detained some suspects. Investigation is on to confirm how and why the murder took place.”

According to the police, Sunny was in love with his neighbour, who belongs to a rich Muslim family. When the couple eloped, the girl’s family filed a complaint of kidnapping against Sunny, his father and his brother on May 23 at the Kotwali police station in Ahmednagar. Police nabbed Sunny in Pune on May 27. After medical tests, the police booked him for rape. Being a minor, he was sent to a remand home. His father and brother were arrested as well.

On June 30, Sunny fled from the remand home along with five other inmates. On Wednesday evening, an advocate, Vilas Ambadas Pawar, spotted his body at Kolhewadi and informed the police. Initially, an accidental death case was registered and the body sent to for autopsy.

After the police identified the body and contacted Sunny’s family, his aunt filed a police complaint alleging he was murdered by the girl’s family because they were against their relationship.

Sources who knew the girl alleged that Sunny was a miscreant and hence her family was against him.
