Two after he was formally coronated “king” of Dewas, Vikram Singh Puar faced arrest in a murder case after his bail plea was rejected on Friday.

As a prince, Puar was on the run for nearly three months before a court granted him conditional anticipatory bail on June 17 to allow his ascension to the throne as his father Tukojirao Puar, a former BJP minister, was dying. Tukojirao Puar died on June 19.

Puar’s lawyer filed a fresh plea on Wednesday seeking extension of bail till the completion of trial. Rejecting the plea, Special Judge S K Mishra said Puar was granted bail only for a specific purpose, and all the funeral rituals had been completed by July 1.

“If he is given bail, it will send the wrong signal that he is being favored because he belongs to a raj gharana,’’ argued Special Public Prosecutor Ashok Chawla.

While the 15-day anticipatory bail period has already ended, the police made no attempt to take Puar into custody. Following reports that Puar had “surrendered” in the Barotha police station on June 22, the police interpreted the previous court order to mean that the 15-day period came into effect after the surrender.

Puar and his accomplices were charged with murder after a person was allegedly killed in a clash with them in March. The accused were reportedly trying to evict the victim’s family from a plot of land.

Puar’s lawyer Ashok Varma said he would challenge the order in the high court. He argued that his client was framed by political rivals, including BJP Minister Deepak Joshi in whose constituency the disputed land falls.

He accused Joshi of trying to scuttle Puar’s political career. Varma even submitted a document in court from a government employee who alleged that he had received a call from Joshi to proceed in the case.
