One son,14 daughters and counting but this Gujarat farmer wants another boy

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s #SelfieWithDaughter campaign got accolades from all across, things in PM’s home state have not changed much. In Jharibujhi village in Gujarat’s Dahod district, a farmer’s wife has given birth to 14 daughters in order to have one son.

Ramsinh Sangod and Kanu have been married for the past eighteen years and already have 14 daughters and one son. But the couple is not satisfied! The wife is pregnant again and the farmer is wishing for another son.

“I have not thought about what we will do if we have another daughter. We are both still young, so we could give it another try,” says the 35-year-old Ramsinh Sangod, to Indian Express . Sangod added that he wanted another son who will look after all his daughters.

The 33-year-old Kanu, who is pregnant for the 16th time, said that her body is tired after 14 daughters and a son. She claimed that her husband had threatened to marry someone else when she was unable to bear a child in first seven pregnancies.

According to the 2011 census, Gujarat’s Dahod district has a child sex ratio of 948 girls per 1000 boys; in 2001, it was 967 per 100 boys.

This comes days after Bibipur, a village in Haryana was credited with encouraging female empowerment after the village sarpanch Sunil Jaglan started a selfie contest as a part of ‘Beti Bachao Selfie Banao’.

Jaglan launched the contest in which parents from across the state had to take selfies with their daughters and send it to village  through social messaging app Whatsapp and the best three selfies would be awarded.
