The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has inaugurated the new vehicle crash test facility in Pune. This facility contains an array of equipments that can be used to conduct full frontal crash test, side impact crash and offset frontal crash test by Indian automakers to test the safety of their vehicles.
The latest crash testing infrastructure is a part of Passive Safety Lab at ARAI’s Chakan campus. The facility comprises an electric AC motor that has a maximum payload capacity of 3.5 tonnes. The motor can propel vehicles up to speeds of 80kmph. While frontal crash tests can be carried out up to a maximum speed of 48.5 - 53kmph, the side impact collision test can be conducted at 50kmph.
Movable and deformable barriers are used to conduct all the aforementioned tests in a controlled environment. The crash test facility also includes a deceleration test sled for testing seats, door locks, seat belts and luggage retention. There is also a static rollover test rig competent for a maximum speed of 80kmph.
ARAI has equipped its lab with two camera pits measuring 6m x 3m x 3m, one each at full frontal and frontal offsetto capture the underbody view of crash tests for later analysis. The facility is equipped with High speed cameras which has a frame rate of 2,000 per second. Lighting systems in the facility are capable of illuminating the area with an intensity of up to 1,50,000 Lux.
With stricter rules this new facility will play an important role in the Indian automotive industry by ensuring that all the cars from the automakers pass through the stringent crash tests thereby ensuring that the safety standards are met.
