AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has demanded that new head coach Sinisa Mihajlovic get the club back into the Champions League next season.

The Italian giants have fallen from grace in recent seasons and only just scraped into the top half last season, finishing 10th.

That led to the sacking of Pippo Inzaghi with former Sampdoria boss Mihajlovic chosen as his successor.

However, there will be no period of adaptation for the Serb with Berlusconi, at the coach’s unveiling, insisting on a top three.

"It's categorically imperative that Milan return to the Champions League and Europe next season,” said the former Italian premier.

Despite his lofty expectations, Berlusconi believes he has the right man to match them, adding: "(Mihajlovic) has all the characteristics needed to restore Milan to (prominence).

"This Milan with Sinisa could have the components to compete with Juventus for first place."

Having signed a two-year contract Mihajlovic is under pressure to get results from the off and has already seen his squad bolstered by the signings of Carlos Bacca from Sevilla, former Shakhtar striker Luiz Adriano and Andrea Bertolacci from Genoa via Roma.

"I often played against Milan, so I know how much respect this shirt represents," said the former Inter defender.
