Ranchi: Many parents opt to take advice from astrologers and buy stones for their children to combat problems like lack of concentration, poor results in examination. Instead of talking to a counsellor, parents make several school children wear costly gemstones like yellow sapphire, pearl, red coral and others to schools in order to bring about a behavioural change.

However, the problem arises when a child loses the stone while playing in schools. On Wednesday, a student lost a hessonite stone ring worth Rs 12,000 at one of the schools and not just parents but even the teachers were frantically searching for it across the school campus.
A teacher said, "If the child loses something costly, the school is blamed for it. We clearly mention it in the school diary that children are not supposed to bring costly objects to school, still parents make them wear these rings and when they are lost, parents start blaming us for it."
On being asked, why he makes his son wear four different types of stone, Vikas Aggarwal, a businessman said, "We believe in our astrologer and because of his suggestions my business flourished. He has said that if my son wears these rings he will not just score well in examinations but also succeed in life."
Similarly, Shashank Paul, another businessman has made his son wear two stones after taking suggestions from his astrologer. He said, "We used to get regular complains from his school about him being short tempered so we made him wear the two stones and now the number of complaints have reduced."
Principal of Delhi Public School, Ram Singh, said that parents should also talk to the school counsellor if they think their child has some problem. He said, "Visiting an astrologer is one’s personal point of view but if parents think that their child is undergoing some crisis situation, they should also talk to the school counsellor."

He added, "If a child is coming to school wearing something expensive, it can prove to be a problem with children who are not financially strong."
