Awaiting some formal approvals from MHRD to finally begin the academic session at Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Visakhapatnam, the mentor IIM Bangalore has appointed  Dr Sourav Mukherjee, Dean Programmes at IIMB as the Nodal officer for IIM Visakhapatnam. Sharing with MBAUniverse.com Kavitha Kumar, Head –Communications at IIMB says “Dr. Sourav Mukherji, IIMB’s Dean Programs, will be the nodal officer during the mentorship period”.

Dr Mukherjee is now supposed to look after all the activities for IIM Visakhapatnam as a director to any IIM does. Although the director to new IIM is appointed by MHRD, in most of the cases the nodal officer appointed for the purpose by the mentor IIM gets confirmed as the director of the said IIM by MHRD.

Dr Sourav Mukherjee has worked with IBM and Oracle in product management functions (1993-1998) and for the Boston Consulting Group as a strategy consultant (2002-2003). Professor Mukherji is an avid follower of sports, runs marathons, and coaches long distance runners as his hobby. His research interest is inclusivity and social enterprises – businesses that address the needs of the poor in a financially sustainable manner. In this domain, he has published several case studies and papers in academic and practitioner oriented journals. He also received  UNDP Fellowship for Research in Inclusive Business Models and  Villgrow Fellowship for Research on Social Entrepreneurship.

In regard to beginning of the admission process at IIM Visakhapatnam Ms Kavitha Kumar has said “Admissions will begin shortly.”

The number of sections for the maiden PGP batch 2015-17 at IIM Visakhapatnam would be one only as shared by the communication head IIM Bangalore “We will be beginning with one section in the first year”.
The first PGP batch 2015-17 at IIM Visakhapatnam is proposed to offer admission to 70 students. Sharing with MBAUniverse.com, Ms Kavitha Kumar Communication head IIM Bangalore says “We will be starting, in the first year, with one section – around 70 students”.

In a Cabinet meeting headed by the Prime Minister on June 24, 2015, it was decided that the first batch at proposed 6 new IIMs would begin with 140 students each. It appears that the announcement came quite late as the temporary campuses of the new IIMs are not so equipped to accommodate such large number of students as hostel facilities for the same number will also be required.

CAT 2014 takers with high percentile have been waiting for the admission process in the proposed 6 new IIMs to begin. IIM Visakhapatnam is their preferred destination and it would be worth waiting for IIM Visakhapatnam with IIM Bangalore mentoring the B-school. In fact out of the proposed 6 new IIMs, 4 IIMs have already begun their admission process and IIM Nagpur has completed the same.  IIM Visakhapatnam proposes to begin its academic session in the month of August 2015.

IIM Visakhapatnam: PI round not expected
In view of very short time left to begin the admission process and academic session, IIM Visakhapatnam may not have any physical GD; PI or WAT for final selection of candidates. It may use the WAT & PI scores provided by IIM Udaipur which has coordinated the process for new IIMs.

Final Selection: Expected weightage
In view of the selection process at other new IIMs, it is expected that selection at this stage will be based on the ranks of the candidates computed separately for each category (General/SC/ST/NC-OBC/DAP) on the basis of their Final Scores (FS). The numbers selected in different categories will be in proportions mandated by the law.

The FS of a candidate, who meets the CAT-2014 cut-offs and who expresses and reconfirms his/her desire to pursue the candidature further by the stipulated date to IIM Visakhapatnam, is expected to be computed using the following weightage:

Final Score = 70% weightage to CAT Score + 10% weightage to WAT scores + 20% weightage of PI scores
(The criteria might get different shape when actually announced)

IIM Bangalore will mentor all activities at IIM Visakhapatnam till it moves to its permanent campus or IIM Visakhapatnam is able to handle these activities entirely on its own.   Faculty from IIM Bangalore would be delivering courses at IIM Visakhapatnam during the mentorship period and till IIM Visakhapatnam’s own faculty are recruited. This may include a few visiting faculty selected by IIM Bangalore to meet their exacting standards.

The overall design, quality and delivery of PGP will be to the standards and with direct involvement of IIM Bangalore. Candidates going to join IIM Visakhapatnam should expect to see some of the best faculty members in the country today.

IIM Visakhapatnam would commence operation from the temporary premises allotted to it at Andhra University campus and will continue at the temporary campus till the 300 acre campus of IIM Visakhapatnam gets ready.
