To enhance green cover, the Mandya Zilla Panchayat has launched a novel initiative of distributing a variety of tree species to women.

The Forest Department has aimed to distribute at least 5 lakh saplings free of cost throughout the district during 2015-16. For the success of the programme, the ZP has decided to use the women-force in the district to improve the green cover, a release from the office of ZP Chief Executive Officer Rohini Sindhuri said on Thursday.

Ms. Sindhuri launched the programme by distributing saplings to girl students at Somanahalli in Maddur taluk.

The Forest Department would distribute saplings of sandalwood, red sanders, teak, silver oak, neem and other species of trees from its own nurseries in different parts of the district.

ZP president Lalitha, standing committee president Divyashree, members Manjula Nagaraju, D.K. Savitha Madhusudan, Maddur taluk panchayat president P. Sandarsha, vice-president Manjula Krishnegowda and others were present.

Those interested to plant trees on their own properties can collect the saplings by submitting necessary documents to the department. For further details, call 9448335390 (K.R.
