2 hurt in fire sparked by incense stick

Father critical, suffers more than 90 pc burns; son under observation with 40 pc burn injuries.

A fire sparked by an incense stick injured two persons, one of whom is in a critical condition at PGI. The incident happened on Thursday morning when Ram Jagat, 45, and his father Ram Kirpal, 60, were getting ready for work. Ram Jagat is out of danger. His father suffered more than 90 per cent burns.

Sector 24 police post in-charge Sub-Inspector Harminderjit said Ram Jagat was praying in his room and the incense stick he was using sparked the fire. The incident occurred around 8.15 am.

Jagat and Kirpal work in the horticulture department of UT and were getting ready to go to work when the incident happened. Other members of the family were on the first floor. “We were preparing meals for my father and grandfather when we heard screams,” said Jyoti, Jagat’s daughter.

According to their statements registered before a magistrate, Jagat was praying near the door of a room on the ground floor. A can of kerosene oil was stored directly under the prayer stand. It spilled over when Jagat accidentally kicked it. The incense stick fell on it, causing a fire, which then spread to the door curtain.

Kirpal, who was standing outside the door next to a washroom, and Jagat tried to douse the curtain blaze. Outside the washroom, a plastic can of petrol  was kept which caught fire from a piece of curtain  which fell on it. “Ram Kirpal was standing near by and was engulfed by flames when the petrol can melted and petrol caught fire,” said S-I Harminder.

“By the time two of our teams reached, the fire was already doused and the injured were taken to hospital,” said an official of the fire and emergency services.

The two injured were taken to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, and from there they were referred to the Advanced Trauma Centre, PGI.

“Ram Kirpal has suffered around 92 per cent burn injuries and his condition remains critical. He has 60 per cent- 70 per cent full thickness burn injuries, which means that a large proportion of both layers of skin – epidermis and dermis — has been destroyed. He will be shifted to the burn unit,” said a doctor at PGI.

The doctor said Ram Jagat had around 40 per cent burn injuries on the face, chest and arms, and was under observation.
