M.S. Swaminathan hails World Food Prize winner

Eminent agricultural scientist M.S.Swaminathan has congratulated Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, recipient of this year’s coveted World Food Prize award.

The announcement of Mr. Abed as recipient of the prestigious award was made during a ceremony at the U.S. State Department, in Washington on Wednesday. Prof. M.S. Swaminathan who is the Chairperson of the Selection Committee for the World Food Prize, said the award would be a boost not only to Bangladesh but to the entire South Asian region.

Sir Abed has been recognised for his decades of service to human development and through building Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee that operates in 10 countries around the world, a note from M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation said.

‘Sources of inspiration’

“Your monumental contributions to poverty and hunger eradication as well as to the empowerment of women are sources of very great inspiration to everyone in South Asia as well as the whole world,” Prof. Swaminathan wrote to Sir Abed.

The World Food Prize is the most prominent global award for individuals whose breakthrough achievements alleviate hunger and promote global food security.
