The upcoming season of CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" will see Sheldon and Amy, who took a step back in the five-year-old relationship, continuing their talk on what's in store for them as a couple.

Although season 8 saw Amy, frustrated with the slow pace at which their relationship was moving, saying she needed to step back and analyse their romance, it was not a complete break-up.

At the same time, Amy's reluctance to continue seeing Sheldon came as a complete shock to him, as the finale ended with Sheldon holding up a ring, speculated to be an engagement ring.

However, actress Mayim Bialik does not want fans to jump to any conclusions before they learn the story behind Sheldon's ring.

"We don't really know what the story is with that ring," Bialik told Los Angeles Times. "And I think that's something I had to remember as an actor. We don't know what he was planning to do with it. We don't know if it was something he got from his mother. We don't know what the process was by which he acquired that and what he would think to do with it."

"People want to jump to all sorts of conclusions," Bialik continued, "because it's super-exciting to do so and they love these characters and they know them. But the neat thing about our show ... and Jim and my character's relationship is that anything can happen. And I think the finale was proof of that."

Knowing Sheldon, who loves to take his sweet time with relationships, the ring could be a promise ring or a commitment ring at the most. Although Sheldon and Amy have been together for five years, they are yet to get intimate, and the most they have done is hold hands and make out.

Meanwhile, showrunner Steve Molaro recently previewed what's in store for the couple, saying Sheldon won't let Amy walk away from him that easily. "I don't know exactly what's going to happen but he's clearly fond of her. I don't think they're done speaking by any means. He's so fond of her — something is going to happen between them, I'm sure," Molaro told The Hollywood Reporter.

A new season of "The Big Bang Theory" will be back on CBS in September.
