Workers making minimum wage in Maryland and Washington, D.C., received a salary bump Wednesday.
The rate of the hourly minimum wage increased from $8 to $8.25 in Maryland and from $9.50 to $10.50 in the District.
The pay hikes in both jurisdictions are part of stepped increases that will continue in coming years.
The Maryland minimum wage will increase incrementally until it reaches $10.10 in 2018.
Meanwhile, the wage in the District will rise to $11.50 in 2016 and after that increases will be tied to the Consumer Price Index.
Despite the gains, activists in the District are pressing to boost the city’s minimum wage further. Labor groups are hoping to get an initiative on the ballot in 2016 that would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.
