DHANBAD: Bharat Coking Coal Limited's (BCCL) Dhanbad unit, on the direction of the chief vigilance commissioner (CVC), has decided to install retina based biometric system in mines and working areas across all 12 mining areas of Dhanbad and suburban regions. Close circuit cameras will also be attached in front or behind the device to monitor the entire system and check outside obstructions or other irregularities.
The system would enable authorities to keep a check on miners' attendance. The system is already functional at BCCL's head office in Koylanagar for more than two months now, said a senior BCCL official.
"The biometric system in the head office has proved to be successful. Authorities will release payments of employees working at Koylanagar based on biometric data from July onwards. We have been asked to update our systems so that the system can be installed in our office, too," said BCCL general manager of Baroda area, Prem Sagar Mishra. He added: "There are about 53,000 coal workers involved in mining and other related activities in Dhanbad and suburban regions of the coal belt".
A senior BCCL officer involved in the project said the biometric system was initially meant to be tested in 24 areas in Kusunda where BCCL has offices, including Dhansar, Kusunda and Godhar, among others. GM of BCCL Kusunda area A K Singh said he had received a directive regarding the installation of the system
