July 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Contract teachers of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation protested outside the civic body’s headquarters on Wednesday, seeking an extension of their tenure.

About 100 teachers protested outside the gates of the Civic Centre, demanding that they be re-engaged.

According to Leader of the House Yogender Chandolia, the contract teachers had been affected in the process of hiring teachers on regular posts.

There were 2,072 contract teachers, in addition to 330 special and nursery teachers, of which 1,500 posts were filled recently through the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB).

A senior North Corporation official said the contract teachers had not qualified as per the DSSSB guidelines.

“The remaining posts will be offered to contract teachers. They will be hired on the basis of merit,” said Mohan Bhardwaj, chairperson of the Standing Committee.
