Jagmohan Yadav will be the new Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh.

An IPS officer of 1983 batch, Mr. Yadav’s name as the next State police chief was cleared by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday. The new DGP succeeds Arvind Kumar Jain, who demitted office on Tuesday. The outgoing police chief had been given three months’ extension after he retired on March 31.

Before taking over as the DGP, Mr. Jagmohan Yadav was the DG of Crime Branch of CID (CB-CID). Considered close to the ruling establishment, Mr. Yadav was made the ADG (Law and Order) when the Samajwadi Party came to power in 2012, only to be shunted out later to an insignificant post.

His elevation ended months of speculation about his fate even as he is due to retire on December 31, 2015.

Mr. Yadav has been preferred over three officers of the 1982 batch -- the DG (Special Investigation Team), Surya Kumar, DG (Home Guards), Ranjan Dwivedi and DG (Fire Services), Praveen Singh. These officers along with at least half a dozen others were in the fray.

Recently, seven IPS officers of the 1984 batch were promoted as officers of Director General rank.
