NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Recent terrorist attacks in France, Kuwait and Tunisia have forced the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to be on high alert for the upcoming July 4 holiday, NYPD Commissioner for Counterterrorism John Miller said in a press conference on Wednesday.
“This may be potentially the most complex counterterrorism overlay for this event ever,” Miller said. “It’s driven by the unfolding world events.”
“This is important because some groups, particularly IS [ISIL], have been very active in social media,” Miller said.
Despite the increased security measures, there is no direct threat against New York City at this time, Miller added.
On June 26, ISIL took credit for two terrorist attacks that killed more than 60 people in Tunisia and Kuwait.
Another attack the same day occurred at a US-owned gas factory near France's second-largest city of Lyon, leaving one dead and two injured.
