Filipino, international artists shine at WPFF awards night


The winners in the Main Competition (left to right): Dutch director Remy van Heugten, whose 'Son of Mine' won the Technical Grand Prize; Turkish director Burak Cem Arliel of 'Crimean', winner of the Grand Jury Prize; Taiwanese director Hsu Li-Da, who directed Special Jury Prize winner 'The End of Love'; Spanish director Ana Murugarren and producer Joaquin Trincado of Grand Festival Prize winner 'Three Lies'; and Indonesian director Angga Dwias Sasongko of 'Filosofi Kopi,' which won the Best Ensemble Performance award.
 
Artists and films from the Philippines, Spain, Taiwan, Indonesia, The Netherlands, Turkey, and Japan were honored at the World Premieres Film Festival's awards night on Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia.

The Grand Festival Prize went to Spanish thriller “Three Lies.” During her acceptance speech, Spanish director Ana Murugarren said through her tears that she was she was honored to have won the prize for her first feature film, which is about children who were stolen from their families and sold during the Franco dictatorship in the 1970s.

The Grand Jury Prize went to Turkish war film “Crimean,” directed by Burak Cem Arliel. In his speech, Arliel said that the film had been emotionally and technically difficult, but that it was all worth it to shine a light on the struggles of Crimean Turks during World War II.

Taiwan's entry, “The End of Love,” won the Special Jury Prize, while Dutch drama “Son of Mine” took the Technical Grand Prize.

In the Filipino New Cinema section, Alvin Yapan’s “An Kubo sa Kawayanan” won Best Picture, while Craig Woodruff Jr.’s “Piring” took second place.

In the Cine Verde section, Austrian director Gunter Schwalger took home the Best Environmental Film for “Since the World was World,” which depicts the life of a farmer living in rural Spain.

The first winners of the new Intercontinental Prize were ASEAN Skies entry “The Last Executioner” directed by Tom Waller of Thailand and Euroview entry “Naked Island” by Tiha Gudac of Croatia.

The films shown at the World Premieres Festival Philippines are being screened at SM cinemas until July 7, 2015.
